13 Weekly Stories at The Drive Coffee Bar

The perfect pairing, coffee and stories join forces during Weekly Stories, a 1hr Storytelling Show Wednesdays at The Drive Coffee Bar! Every week, hear tales told by the cities best storytellers!  Did we mention you can order alcohol at this cafe? Bonus: La Grotta sandwiches and Cartem’s Donuts.

12 Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg Exhibit

Consider this your LAST chance to see Takashi Murakami‘s colorful exhibition: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The renowned showcase was initially organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and this year, Vancouver fans of the legendary Japanese artist were lucky enough see a bevy of paintings and sculptures in person.

What are you waiting for? The exhibition wraps up May 6! (All the cool kids are doing it.)

11 Art World Expo

With nature and eco-sustainability at the forefront, the annual Art World Expo gala is one of BC’s TOP art events, and features over 100 local and international artists, body painters – including a world famous body painting competition –  live musicians and performers!  The event for those in seek of an “out-of-the-box” experience.

Proceeds support the Make and Break Arts Foundation.

10 Aeriosa at The Dance Centre

Dance and rock-climbing come together to explore new heights during Aeriosa. Led by Artistic Director, Julia Taffe, this show explores the many qualities, forms and lifecycles of bamboo, brought to life by a cast of badass dancers, with music by award-winning composer Jordan Noble.  Don’t worry, we promise you won’t be left in suspense.

9 The Colin Mochrie Experience

It’s time to excercise your funny bone! Vancouver TheatreSports alumni, and star of Whose Line Is It Anyway, improv master Colin Mochrie takes the stage at The Vogue Theatre this month to host a complete laugh-fest. You can also catch Colin on May 24 at the Improv Theatre for Colin Up Close and Personal, for a more intimate performance, and Colin and Friends on May 26 – also at the Improv Theatre.

Tickets for the performance at The Vogue Theatre go on sale Monday, April 16 at 10:00am.

4 2018 Chocolate Challenge

It’s the sweetest battle! Watch seven of Vancouver’s master chocolatiers go head-to-head for The Gourmet Warehouse 6th annual Chocolate Challenge.  Masters will work alongside their top protegees to impress guests with an assortment of original bonbons – AND impress the judges. This year’s judges include Christophe Bonzon from Chez Christophe, Thierry Busset from Thierry, Thomas Haas from Thomas Haas, Steven Hodge from Temper Pastry, Greg Hook from Chocolate Arts, Danny Capadouca from Okanagan College, and Jeffry Kahle from the Fairmont Pacific Rim.
In addition to chocolate, there will be gourmet food stations and wine bars, and a silent auction where guests can bid on items including a trip to San Francisco, tickets for a hands-on sushi making workshop, and invitations for chef table tasting menus at some of the top restaurants in town.
The 2018 Chocolate Challenge is all in support of a great cause.  Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the Vancouver Firefighter Charities Snacks for Kids program, Project Chef, and the Strathcona Backpack Program.

3 Crafted Vancouver

2 Vancouver Design Week

IMPACT is the central theme for Vancouver Design Week 2018!  A week-long celebration of world-class local design talent, varying in disciplines, VDW attendees are invited to take part in a variety of city-wide workshops, events and activities from Gastown to UBC.

From talks to tours, exhibitions to workshops, to a variety of exciting parties, design from all disciplines will open its doors to conversations, installations and celebrations of all scales, uncovering the unique design ecosystems that shape, define and sustain our city.

1 Art Smash

Just when you thought Granville Island couldn’t get any more lively, BOOM! In enters Art Smash!  A new annual event in partnership with the Vancouver Mural Festival, Art Smash is a celebration of visual art in public spaces. Thanks to the talents of nine local artists and one international muralist, Granville Island will come alive with some sweet new murals starting May 1st.

The murals will occupy walls around The Chain & Forge – Granville Island’s newest public space – located underneath the Granville Street Bridge.

Participating artists include renowned Musqueum artist, Debra Sparrow, Lauren Brevner, Kelsey Hall (KC Hall), James Harry, Sandeep Johal, Kari Kristensen, Eric Louie, Victoria Sieczka and Jeremy Wong (JNASTY). Watch out for Spanish artist Ruben Sanchez, who will be bringing his signature feel-good, skateboard-and-graffiti-inspired style to Granville Island!

The Murals will take roughly 10 days to complete and will be officially unveiled on May 12th during the Art Smash Street Party!
