January felt like the longest month – EVER. (74 days long, according to Twitter.) Thankfully, it’s finally done. Over with. Finito. Hasta la proxima! On to a better month. Here’s a look at what’s happening around the city, from free art shows to Mardi Gras parties to fundraisers and everything in between!
Chewies Steam and Oyster Bar Coal Harbour

Kick-off the Family Day long weekend with a colourful Mardi Gras celebration at Chewies! Join their ‘ Krewe de Chew’ for a very Nola-inspired evening of live music and $1.50 fresh oysters! Prizes will be awarded to those with the best Mardi Gras costumes.
Tickets are $10 at the door and includes beads and a New Orleans inspired cocktail.
The University Women’s Club of Vancouver at Hycroft
6 pm to 9 pm
Yes! Vancouver, a philanthropic networking group and community of women is turning 10 and to celebrate, the non-profit is throwing a glitzy party to raise $10,000 for Dress for Success Vancouver!
That 10k will go towards helping 27 women, throughout the Lower Mainland, receive dressing, career, and mentoring services, as well as a community of peers to help empower them back into the workforce.
In addition to tastings and fashion previews, the evening will also include a silent auction with getaway and staycation packages up for grabs.
Tickets: $40 for Members, $50 for Non-Members with 100% of proceeds going directly to Dress for Success.

Welcome spring with internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Takashi Murakami at the Vancouver Art Gallery! Titled Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg, the exhibition will feature over 55 painting and sculptures. This is Murakami’s first retrospective in Canada.
Murakami is known for his collaborations with high-profile brands such as Louis Vuitton, Vans and for his work with artists like Kanye West and Pharrell. Tickets available at murakami.vanartgallery.bc.ca

A free one-day art show put on by District Local, Get Lucky returns for a second year in celebration of Chinese New Year and the Vancouver creative scene! Over 25 local artists will come together at Fortune Sound Club to showcase their work, covering a wide-range of mediums.
The event is open to anyone and everyone so bring your kids, wife, g-ma and support local!

Pushing artistic boundaries, PuSh Festival returns for another year of groundbreaking work in theatre, dance, multimedia, music and film! Come together with creative minds to experience a brilliant and diverse showcase of live performance art.

One of Canada’s premier food and wine events, Vancouver International Wine Festival truly is an experience to be had. Returning for its 40th year, the focus this year is on Spanish and Portuguese wines! Sample wines from over 150 wineries, attend wine brunches and dinners in some of Vancouver’s top restaurants – basically get into full wino mode!

An annual event, and one that we very much look forward to, is the Science of Cocktails hosted at Science World. Every year, the Science of Cocktails brings out the best bartenders and chefs in Vancouver to show the science behind alcohol. Get up close and personal with some of Vancouver’s finest as they create innovative and unique cocktails you’ve likely never tried!
